What is it?
Midcoast.com Spots is a Wi-Fi hotspot addition to our network. It is meant to provide a useful service to our customer with their new Wi-Fi enabled devices when they are out and about away from their normal service locations. Laptops, PDAs, Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and other communications tools now have Wi-Fi built in. Our customers would like to be able to use them reliably outside their home or office, but would like to avoid spending additional money for (or stealing) Wi-Fi to use those devices. It is not a replacement for fixed broadband (Wireless or DSL installed to your home or business). We are well known for our wireless broadband network and competitive DSL options. We have ten years of experience with wireless broadband and DSL - more than anyone around! We are always putting these talents to use in new ways; Wi-Fi is only one talent. We provide broadband service to homes and businesses using equipment for that is not Wi-Fi compatible, as those services have demands that Wi-Fi does not meet in areas of scalability, security, reliability, range, or performance. However, Wi-Fi is cheap and useful when used as intended. Midcoast.com Spots provides Wi-Fi Internet access in specific locations deemed most useful by our customers. |

Who is it for?
Most Midcoast.com customers. Any Midcoast.com customer who has a dialup access option can use Spots; This includes all wireless broadband customers and most of our DSL customers, as those service plans include dialup access. Spots uses the same login data. Midcoast.com Spots uses authentication to permit Wi-Fi access, using the same name/password combination as would be used for dialup. The first time you try to access as webpage via a Midcoast.com Spot, you will see a page like this where you need to log in with your midcoast.com or lincoln.midcoast.com login information. The information is then encrypted, sent to a midcoast.com server for authentication, and then you are granted access to the rest of the Internet. There is no additional charge. This is a benefit of being a Midcoast.com customer. Due to variety of Wi-Fi devices and usage variables, there is no way to provide the same end-to-end troubleshooting/support that we would normally undertake for fixed wireless or DSL broadband services. Some practice or skill may be needed to master your own portable Wi-Fi enabled devices. If you are a traveler, visitor, non-MIS customer, or have other short term Internet needs, we recommend the use of the Abacus hotspots you may find in the area. |
